A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
