Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
