British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
