Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
