The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That United Generations Between Rock Fans

Marking two decades after Guitar Hero hit the market across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the opportunity to feel like a rock star. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that anyone who's nailed Free Bird’s four-minute guitar solo before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by the developers, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues scrolling down the screen in time with the music. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, producing the feel of a genuine live show.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable series which made a remarkable impact on numerous musicians included, showcasing decades-old groups to millions of younger players.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles in securing the songs – despite the fact the first two games mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song since the cost was so high,” he explains. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain it would fail. However, when the game became a hit, and record sales and radio play increased, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was the number of parents got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the songs they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band the Answer had their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician Paul Mahon recalls how the series brought classic rock back into vogue: “The game provided a larger, younger audience. Typically this had been seen as music that was past it, however when it was included in the title young people were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated it, and got rid of the outdated tag. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record remained not available in the US, meaning the game was a key medium for exposure for the band during their a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew were playing the song on the tour bus, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized game editions centered around their music collections and associated stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the band greater revenue than any of their records. It sold well over half a million copies in its first week, while sales of their songs saw an increase significantly during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Earlier this year, an online personality achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through the game – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics and extensive customisation options. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone played at increased tempo and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated it took months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, fantasy thing. Just as with Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up a real gun and enlist,” notes DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band had already wrapped up a successful tour before Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, yet he explains it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it has risked eclipsing all other accomplishments. Last year, the track was used in promotional material for a major film. “In the past I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “Should you just listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has their own path in music and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for cars, apparel or games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “That’s exactly what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a music icon on the stage. Since the beginning, the creators believed humans have a natural human desire to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority installments came out over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, featuring spin-offs such as the DJ version, complete with a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Games like Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the scene active, and there’s set to be something from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has begun production on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are participating as special advisers. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed such titles could be like Madden where you can releases,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant new music it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t persist for future fans.”
