The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
