The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size of the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the leader try to upend the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of love into a figure of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; however I believe that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you ought to provide the person your additional clothing also.
The evident and clear reality that Christ of the gospels requests a form of extreme compassion focused on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
So I have been heartened to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or not?
The nation is most protected, essentially, through connection to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to elements that cause it to be special and beautiful, which is the example of Jesus. In both situations does it suggest acting as if the most negative of both America and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both modesty and faith, a blend that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
